AMRUTHOTHARAM KASHAYAM is a potent ayurvedic medicine in liquid form. It is widely used in the Kerala’s traditional practice of ayurveda.

This medicine is used extensively by doctors to treat all types of fever. The combination is wisely designed by the vaidyas in the text Sahasrayogam consisting of three ingredients: Amruta, Hareetaki and nagara. Traditionally it is also known by the name nagaradi kashayam.

Amruta acts as anti-pyretic, immuno booster and anti microbial herb, nagara is ama pachaka and hareetaki is a carminative.It is known to cure fever caused due to aggravation of all the three doshas.

It is very effective in the pre-monetary stage of fever due its carminative action thereby reducing fever.

Indication:

  • Fever
  • Constipation
  • Flatulence
  • Stuffy nose
  • Fatigue
  • Loss of appetite
  • Gout

Dosage:

Adult dose – 15ml + 60 ml warm water twice daily one hour before food.

Pediatric dose:5-10 ml + 60 ml warm water twice daily one hour before food.

Geriatric dose: 5-10 ml + 60 ml warm water twice daily one hour before food.

Anupana:

It has to be taken with 1 tsp of sugar to promote its action.

Ingredients:

Nagara - Ginger (Zingiber officinale)-2 parts
Amruta - Neem Giloy ( Tinospora cordifolia) 6 parts
Haritaki – Harad (Terminalia chebula) 4 parts

It is added with 8 parts of water, boiled and reduced to quarter part.

Method of manufacturing:

All the ingredients in coarse powder form is added with 8 or 16 parts of water, boiled and reduced to 1/4 or 1/8th part, filtered and preserved.

Amruthotharam kashayam works the best with :

  1.  Vettumaran gulika in chronic fever
  2.  Gorochandi gulika in fever associated with burning sensation and vomiting of bile.
  3.  Swasanandam gulika in cases of fever with breathing difficulty

Precautions:

  1. Amruthotharam kashayam  is possibly safe and well-tolerated in most of the patients.
  2. It should not be taken during pregnancy or taken strictly under supervision of ayurvedic physician if necessary and no other alternative available.
  3. Lactating mothers can take this medicine without any possible side effects.
  4. Over dosage of Amruthotharam Kashayam can lead to following adverse effects:
  • Heartburn
  • Gastric Irritation
  • Loose stools
  • Burning sensation in the abdomen
