Coronary Heart Disease and Atherosclerosis Coronary heart disease (CHD) is a disease in which a waxy substance called plaque builds up inside the coronary arteries which supply oxygen-rich blood to the muscles of the heart. This build up of plaque happens over many years and cause the arteries to harden. The plaque is made of fat, cholesterol, calcium, and other substances found in the blood. When there is plaque buildup, the arteries become narrower and harder resulting in Atherosclerosis. Atherosclerosis can obstruct the normal flow of blood and can cause heart attack, stroke or even death.In the United States, CHD is deemed as the number one cause of death for both men and women. Hypercholesterolemia refers to the presence of high cholesterol in the blood. When there is too much cholesterol in the blood, it creates sticky deposits called plaque. These get deposited along the walls of the arteries causing obstruction of blood flow. This obstruction is a high risk factor for heart attack and stroke.Sedentary lifestyle coupled with a high saturated fat diet is often the culprit behind high cholesterol levels.
The medical treatment of CHD is decided based up on how far the disease has progressed. In the initial stages, along with medications (vasodilators, beta blockers etc.) lifestyle changes are advised. Terminalia arjuna (Arjuna Ghana)- Arjuna induces improvement of cardiac muscle function and subsequently improves pumping activity of the heart. The Arjuna promotes effective cardiac functioning, and regulates blood pressure and tones the heart.
Carum roxburghianum (Ajmoda Ghana )- This is credited with stimulant and carminative properties and is prescribed as a sedative and tonic. This is prescribed as a decoction or as a liquid extract. The fatty oil from seeds is used in many medicinal preparations as an antispasmodic and nerve stimulant. This is also credited with diuretic property.
Tribulus terrestris (Gokharu Ghana)- Tribulus Terrestris is considered as a miracle herb in India & used as a physical rejuvenation tonic. This herb is used in the treatment of urinary disorders and impotence, kidney diseases and gravel, diseases of the genito-urinary system, calculus affections, gout etc.
Punica granatum (Dadim Chhal)- Scientific research group tested pomegranate juice on both humans and laboratory mice which were genetically predisposed to develop heart disease. They found that pomegranate juice decreased LDL ("bad cholesterol") and increased HDL ("good cholesterol") by 20% in humans. The oxidation of LDL, which is believed by many researchers to be a major cause of heart disease, was reduced by up to 90%.
Vitis vinifera (Draksha Ghana)- Enhances capillary strength and vascular function which helps the heart and decreases PMS problems, bruising, edema from injury or trauma varicose veins, leg swelling and retinopathy. Enhanced immune resistance, increased peripheral circulation, improved vision, reduced adverse allergic and inflammatory response, reduction in skin aging and loss of elasticity.
Piper longum (Pimpli Ghana)- Inducing alterations in membrane dynamics and permeation characteristics along with induction in synthesis of proteins associated with cytoskeletal function resulting in an increase in the small intestine absorptive surface, thus assisting efficient permeation through the epithelial barrier.
Adhatoda vasika (Vasa Patra Ghana)-The active alkaloid vasicine and its auto oxidation product vasicinone have shown bronchodilator and antihistaminic effects. Uterine stimulant activity and moderate hypotensive activity of the alkaloids were reported. Thrombopoeitic activity of vasicine has been observed.
Cinnamomum cassia (Twak Ghana) - Cinnamon is among the most grateful and efficient of the aromatics. It is warm and cordial to the stomach, carminative, distinctly astringent, and, like most other substances of this class, more powerful as a local than as a general stimulant. .It is seldom prescribed alone, though, when given in powder or infusion, it will sometimes allay nausea, check vomiting, and relieve flatulence. It is chiefly used as an adjuvant, and enters into a great number of official preparations. It is often employed in diarrhea, in connection with chalk and astringents.
Three myrobalans (Triphala Ghana) -This is laxative, alterative, anti inflammatory, carminative, expectorant, anti oxidant and anti microbial. Useful for digestion, lungs, skin, eyes and weight management.
Tinospora cordifolia (Guduchi Ghana)- Used in general debility, dyspepsia, fevers and urinary diseases. The bitter principle present in the drug show antiperiodic, antispasmodic anti inflammatory and antipyretic prope plant is used in Ayurvedic rasayanas to improve the immune system and the body's resistance to infections. It is used as immunomodulator in immunosuppression of obstructive jaundice, fibrosis, peritonitis and sepsis.

Recommended lifestyle Changes
Eat fresh fruits, vegetables, almonds, spices like fenugreek, ginger, garlic and turmeric.
Avoid processed foods, junk foods heavy and cold foods and deep-fried foods.
Take fibre rich foods. Oats, quinoa, fibre rich fruits and vegetables are beneficial.Taking foods rich in good cholesterol (HDL) is helpful. Spinach, fish, canola oil, avocado oil, olive oil, seeds, nuts, oranges, avocados etc. are HDL rich.
Drink plenty of water. Check on caffeine and alcohol intake. Smoking should be avoided.
Start some aerobic exercise. You should get at least 30 minutes of activity three times a week.Lose weight if you are overweight.
Adopt a stress management technique like meditation or pranayama (deep breathing technique).
