Hyperthyroidism (overactive thyroid)
The thyroid gland is the largest of endocrine glands and is located on the front part of the neck below the thyroid cartilage. It produces the thyroid hormone which has a variety of functions like regulating the body's metabolism and calcium balance and the body's use of other hormones. Thyroid goiter is an enlargement of the thyroid that can occur with hyperthyroidism, hypothyroidism, with benign and malignant nodules. When the thyroid gland is overactive the condition is called hyperthyroidism. The thyroid gland then produces excessive thyroid hormone causing symptoms like irritability, palpitations, weight loss or gain, heat intolerance, decreased menstrual flow etc. One of the common causes of thyroidism is Graves Disease.

Hypothyroidism (underactive thyroid)
Hypothyroidism is a common condition in which the thyroid gland does not make enough thyroid hormone. It is seen more commonly women than men and its incidence is found to increase with age. Symptoms of hypothyroidism include weight gain, fatigue, drowsiness, depression, cold intolerance and other often overlooked symptoms like hair loss, dry skin etc. Some common causes of hypothyroidism are iodine deficiency, pregnancy, and pituitary disorders.

Many of us are at least a few kilos overweight than their recommended weight. You are called overweight if you have more body fat than just being healthy. Though a couple of kilos of excess weight does no harm, being excessively overweight and obese jeopardizes ones health.

Body Mass Index is the real indicator of your obesity:

BMI of 18.5 and less - Underweight
BMI Between 18.5-24.9 - Normal Weight
BMI of 25 and Above - Overweight
BMI Between 25-30 - Pre-Obesity
BMI of 30 and Above Obesity

The next comes waist circumference:

If you are a woman with a waist measurement of 35 inches or above and man with 40 inches or above, you are definitely overweight! When fat accumulates to an extent that it causes health concerns you are called obese. Obesity increases you risk of heart disease, type 2 diabetes, hypertension, high cholesterol, osteoarthritis, obstructive sleep apnea, asthma, certain types of cancer and stroke. Poor diet and sedentary lifestyle are the common causes of obesity next only to genetics.

Exercise and Yoga- Regular physical activity has a positive effect on overall health. For thyroid disorders there are many yogasanas which help to stimulate and correct the function of the thyroid glands. Yoga also helps to increase metabolism, enhance blood circulation, reduce tension and anxiety and promote inner peace.Pranayama or deep breathing exercise increases the oxygen level in the cells thereby bringing about an overall improvement in health.
