Flaxseed oil is the richest vegetarian source of Omega 3 fatty acids. These are essential fatty acids because the body requires them for proper functioning and cannot synthesize from other fats or Trans fats. So they are to be ingested with food. Flax is an yellow flowering plant that is grown for its oil rich seeds.
Active ingredients of Flaxseed oil are capable of lowering cholesterol level and reducing platelet aggregation. Omega 3 fatty acids when sufficiently available, can favorably modulate the cell membrane characteristics to reduce or inhibit silent inflammatory responses that play major roles in coronary artery diseases, platelet aggregation, arthritis and other inflammatory disorders. Omega 3 fatty acids are of wider significance as dietary supplement of essential fatty acids for pregnant women, nursing mothers, infants, children, arthritic patients, cardiac patients etc.
The extract also contains vitamins, minerals, fiber and protein. The protein in flax seeds is easily digested and contains all the amino acids needed for building a strong body. They also contain a special fiber called mucilage which removes toxic metabolic waste material from the colon and dried mucus. Mucilage helps to stabilize blood sugar levels, and is a natural laxative. Flax fiber promotes friendly bacteria in the intestine, which keeps disease-causing organisms in check. Lignans of flax seed have antiviral, antibacterial, antifungal properties and also is an antioxidant.
The extract of the seed increases metabolic rate thus making it easier to burn off fats, a real boon to the obese people to reduce weight and in general boosts energy and stamina considerably. Mineral absorption is better with the extract especially that of calcium.
Other benefits from the extract includes optimum development of brain, strengthening of nails, and improvement of eyesight and perception of colors. It may improve the function of the liver and can relieve some cases of premenstrual syndrome (PMS) in females.
Flax seed extract takes a bit of time to be absorbed into the body before the full beneficial effects begin, it may range anywhere between a few days to as many as six weeks.
Omega - 3 Natural Essential Fatty Acids:
Omega-3 fatty acids are poly unsaturated fatty acids (PUFA) found in vegetable and animal kingdom. Alpha Linolenic acid (ALA), the parent fatty acid of Omega-3 family is an essential fatty acid (EFA). It is not synthesized by the body and must be supplemented through diet.
Human body can convert ALA to Eicosa pentaenoic acid (EPA) and Docosahexaenoic acid (DHA). Omega-3 fatty acids are found less in foods. The main sources of Omega-3 fatty acids are flax seed oil and fish oil. Flax seed oil is the world’s richest source of Omega-3 fatty acids, mainly ALA. Omega-3 fatty acids found in certain types of fish like Sardine consist of both EPA and DHA.
Omega-3 in health:
EFA’s perform two vital functions in the body. The first is structural as part of the membrane barrier surrounding the cells and organelles. The second involves the communication between cells, known as signalling.
In cardiac health:
The benefits of Omega-3 in cardiovascular diseases provide the strongest and most compelling evidence favoring its use. EPA competes with arachidonic acid (AA) leading to decreased production of proinflammatory agents. It decreases production of thromboxane (TxA2) producing potential anti-thrombotic effect. Membrane stabilization in cardiac tissue by EFA confers anti-arrhythmic effects whereas triglyceride lowering effect is caused by reduction and secretion of very low density lipoproteins from liver. They also increase systemic arterial compliance (SAC) and tend to reduce pulse pressure and total vascular resistance.
Mothers and infants:
Omega-3 fatty acid use in pregnancy has shown promise in prolonging gestation and the prevention of preterm labor by inhibition of AA. DHA is of utmost importance for normal development of the brain, neural and retinal tissues in fetuses and newborns. DHA supplementation is mandatorily recommended for pregnant and lactating women by WHO for the benefit of next generation with improved IQ and Eye Q.
Essential Fatty Acid supplementation consistently shows modest clinical improvement in patients with rheumatoid arthritis. Reduction of tumor necrosis factor, interleukin levels and other pro-inflammatory agents have been hypothesized as the main effect of Omega-3 fatty acids in arthritis.
Flax seed oil is a standardized concentrate of stable omega-3 fatty acid derived from pure flax seed oil. It is an excellent alternative to dietary supplementation of Omega-3 fatty acids
Omega-3 fatty acids are of profound significance as dietary supplement for essential fatty acids generally and particularly to cardiac patients, pregnant and lactating women, infants, arthritic patients etc.

1. How is it different from the omega3 fatty acids of fish oil?
This is vegetarian source of omega3 fatty acids and also contain fibers
2. What are the functions of essential fatty acids?
Essential fatty acids have many functions throughout the body. They are involved in energy production, brain function, improves vision. EFAs are required for healthy skin and hair, and are required for normal nail growth.
3. How does it help weight loss?
Omega-6 slightly and omega-3 more effectively help reduce fat production in the body. They also increase fat burning and heat production in the body, and change the body from burning glucose to burning fats. Saturated, monounsaturated, and trans- fatty acids do not help to manage weight.
4. How does it reduce the risk of Cardiovascular Disease?
Omega-3 can decrease most CVD risk factors, including high triglycerides blood pressure, platelet stickiness, fibrinogen, and lipoprotein(a). Omega-3 also keep the inside of our arteries smooth. Omega-3 and omega-6 keep the heart beat regular.
